For a long time, there has been a dilemma whether a photo in a CV is necessary or not.
Can you imagine any social network without a profile picture? Without a photo, the profile seems incomplete, and its legitimacy is often questioned.
As for CVs, nowadays there is a trend where work experience and qualifications are emphasized, while a photo or even a date of birth is excluded in order to avoid potential discrimination based on age or appearance.
According to our opinion, the decision of whether to insert a photo or not depends on the position you are applying for.
For example, if you are applying for a job in the hospitality industry, it is advisable to include a photo because it completes your presentation to the employer. In every hospitality job description you will see that neatness and a professional appearance are emphasized as necessary qualities, which is quite understandable considering the nature of the job, which involves contact with guests, preparation and serving of food and drinks, and other similar tasks. A high-quality and professional photo can help you present yourself in the best possible way.
Of course, the lack of a picture will not reduce your chances of getting an interview invitation.
If you decide to include a photo in your CV, it is important to follow certain rules:
- Choose a good photo with a good resolution (avoid blurry photos)
- Photos with white or one-colored background look neater and more suitable for a CV
- Choose simple clothes. A white shirt will make a great impression.
- Smile 😁
Photos that are unprofessional and have no place in a CV:
- Photos from weddings, birthdays and similar events in restaurants or cafes
- Photos of you hugging another person or a pet
- Photos from the beach in a bath suit
- Photos with odd frames, selfies, filters…
- Photos in inappropriate clothing.
If you don’t have a suitable photo, leaving it out is a better solution.
