Nikola, 31 years, Viking – Bar waiter

Why did you first apply for a job on a ship?

I wanted to earn money that I could not earn in Serbia despite my knowledge and experience. I have been working on the ship for 8 seasons.

What was the most difficult thing for you when you started working on a ship?

Working on a ship is different from land-based work. I was not used to the everyday work that is expected on the ship. Also, it is not always easy to find a common language with colleagues. Besides, separation from family and friends was the hardest.

What are the advantages of working on a river ship?

The advantage is definitely good money and more vacations than on the ocean ship. You work in Europe and are always close to home.

What challenges did you face on a daily basis?

Hard work, colleagues from all over the world with whom it is sometimes difficult to find a common ground, and demanding management.

What advice would you give to the people who go on a ship for the first time?

It’s just important to get through the first month and not give up. In the beginning, you will feel that you cannot live up to expectations. However, once you learn how the job is done and what is expected from you, you will fit in and it will be much easier for you.
