Dragan, 30 years, Viking – Utility

Why did you first apply for a job on a ship?

I wanted to change my current lifestyle, as well as earn a good salary and gain ship experience.

What was the most difficult thing for you when you started working on a ship?

Adaptation to a new lifestyle can be difficult for someone, as well as the work that has to be done. Also, the lack of free time can be challenging. It’s more difficult at the beginning, but with teamwork and good organization, you can do your work more easily and have more free time.

What are the advantages of working on a river ship?

The advantages are many. These are definitely trips (who likes to travel), new acquaintances, and a lot of free time compared to other jobs abroad or in our home country. The company I work for offers paid annual leave (more than 3 weeks), a good salary that cannot be compared to wages in Serbia, paid accommodation, and food. There are no additional costs on board, except for personal expenses.

What challenges did you face on a daily basis?

Sometimes it is fatigue and lack of sleep. Also, the feeling of being fed up is present when you are on the same ship with the same itinerary for the whole season. Being mentally strong is more important than physical strength.

What advice would you give to the people who go on a ship for the first time?

Don’t be afraid, the beginning may be a little difficult, but as time goes by, you will realize that it is not so hard. If you have a positive attitude towards people and problems, the work will flow smoother, and some doors open by themselves.
