When applying for a job, a common question is whether it is enough to send a CV or whether you should also prepare a cover letter and references. Although there is no universal rule that applies to every job, the most important thing is to carefully read the job advertisement and check what the employer expects from candidates.
A CV is the essential part of every job application and, in most cases, represents the first step in the selection process. That is why it is important for it to be up to date, well-structured, and to clearly present your previous experience, education, and skills that are relevant to the position you are applying for.
A cover letter is usually not mandatory, but it can be a good opportunity to briefly introduce yourself and explain why you are interested in that particular job. It does not have to be long – a few specific sentences about your experience and motivation are often more than enough.
When it comes to references, they are generally provided when requested by the employer. However, it is useful to have a reference from a previous employer prepared, especially if you have experience that you would like to support with additional confirmation.
The goal is not to send as many documents as possible, but to provide the right information in the right way. A well-prepared CV is the most important part, while a cover letter and references can be an additional advantage when they are genuinely relevant.
