Celebrating Easter in different cultures

Easter is one of the most important holidays in Europe, symbolizing a new beginning, togetherness, and time spent with loved ones. Although its essence remains the same, customs and ways of celebrating differ from country to country, making it especially interesting for those working in an international environment.

River cruise ships, where our candidates work, travel through various European countries, including Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Because of this, crew members have the opportunity to encounter diverse traditions and experience the holiday atmosphere in a unique way.

In Germany, Easter is celebrated in a warm, family-oriented spirit. One recognizable tradition is decorating branches with colorful eggs, while children take part in Easter egg hunts, searching for sweets brought by the Easter Bunny. In many places, Easter bonfires are also held, symbolizing the arrival of spring.

France offers a slightly different approach to this holiday. Traditionally, church bells do not ring from Good Friday until Easter, and their return symbolically marks the arrival of the holiday, along with gifting children chocolate treats. A family lunch takes a central place, often featuring lamb on the table.

In the Netherlands, Easter is celebrated in a more relaxed atmosphere, often outdoors when the weather allows. Families gather for a rich breakfast that includes eggs, pastries, and traditional sweet bread with dried fruit.

Working on river cruise ships provides a special opportunity to experience these traditions firsthand. Although holidays are often spent away from home, encountering different cultures makes the experience even more valuable and unforgettable.
